Reservation For Girls In IITs. Good or Bad?

In a bid to increase the intake number of girls in IITs, a panel has recommended 20% reservation for them. The panel however has also reiterated that it will in no way affect the number of male candidates. Whether the decision will come into force from the current year or 2018 is yet to be concluded.

Can reservation really solve the problem?

Instead of reservation, authorities should focus on adding scholarships for the economically challenged or meritorious students. Reservation, be it for girls or caste-based doesn't really help. As it is, we are diluting the niche of IITs by adding tons of new ones and departments outside the sciences.
Former IIT-M alumnus

Reservation for girls is a temporary fix. What we need to focus on is a long-term solution. How about a point system like the IIMs where girlsa re given favourable bonus points. But, more than that awareness and breaking the stereotypes in this patriarchal society should be the utmost priority. Change has to start at the secondary education level. Girls should be provided more opportunities to prepare for such exams. You cannot expect the intake to increase if the number of girls preparing for such exams is less.
Monish Rajendran, former IIT-M alumnus

Is it true that girls don't want to opt for engineering?

The problem is it is ingrained in us that boys are technically more sound than girls. So much so that we would often find girls refusing to take part in contests fearing boys. I think this fear is what needs to be addressed first. It is not that girls don't want to opt for engineering. But, the support, guidance and understanding that should reach her since the time she steps into education is of extreme importance.
Parichita Basak, Final yr B-Tech student, Delhi

I opted for computer science engineering not because it was an easier subject to study but because I loved computers and I wanted to be in IT always. This is a myth that engineering is meant for boys only. But the myth can be broken only when people around girls tell them that it isn't an impossible task.
Shreya Srivastava, Software Engineer, Delhi

Girls prefer to choose other fields because engineering generally requires field work in many areas. However, this  notion is changing slowly as there are many branches that offer office jobs.
Vinti Jetley, teacher, Navy Children School, Mumbai

Girls are still not open to engineering as an option because it has the image of being harder and manly, especially branches like mechanical, civil, chemical and aerospace engineering. The few who do join engineering are more inclined towards electronics and communication or information technology. It is true to a certain extent that these branches are tougher. But girls have to cross this barrier. Today, we have girls who are fighter pilots so there is no reason why they can't do engineering. There is a mental barrier and it will take a generation before this change takes place. If you see the results of class X and class XII, the girls always fare better.
Prof Raghunandan B N, dept of Aerospace Engg, IISc, Bengaluru

Youth reporters seem divided over reservation of any kind

This favouritism towards girl by providing them reservation, quotas etc is not going to fetch the authorities anything. Start from home. Don't handover the girl child a doll because she is a girl. Don't force her to learn cooking because that's very important to fetch her a good future husband. Don't stop her from stepping out fearing for her safety. Rather, let the girl decide on her own what she wants to do. She may love mechanical over computers. You may never know?
Adhiraaj Roy, class IX, DPS Vasant Kunj, Delhi

Provide girls with access to good coaching centres. Make them learn and unlearn new things. Don't create a boundary around their learnings. Unless more girls aspire to be engineers, reservation of any sort won't help.
Aditi Bhattacharya, class IX, DAV Sreshta Vihar, Delhi

I believe that we must not go towards reservations based on gender, caste or religion. It does not push the individual concerned to work for their position. We must work towards establishing equality. It would be better to enable girls, or others in cases of other reservations - with the needed content and support them to achieve success.
Samarth Jain, class X, BGS National Public School, Bengaluru

I don't think providing reservation for girls is a good idea. Girls are doing very well without reservations and excelling in fields like engineering and medical. Providing reservation would only demoralise the girls.
Sohini Ganguly, class X, DAV Public School, Nerul, Navi Mumbai

Reservation since the beginning has been misused by people. This step taken by IIT is definitely an encouraging step for girls but it must be made sure that because of reservation  talented and productive people are not deprived. This would make it difficult for genuine aspirants.
Manasvi Rawal, class X, Ryan International School, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai

It's really a good steep to promote gender equality and women empowerment. Also, it can encourage girls who come from a conservative background but have talent to come out and excel at highest level. But these reservations must be there in many other fields not just engineering so that there is more scope for budding talent to develop into a wider population.
Rashmi Deshpande, class IX, Narayana Vidyalaya, Nagpur

I personally would not vouch for such a reservation. Just providing reservation isn't going the arouse passion towards engineering in girls. Those who love the idea and concept of engineering will buy into it irrespective of the reservation. It might result in a number of people taking up engineering just for the sake of it and it will be the polar opposite of the old adage that says 'Do what you love'.
Shaswat Kumar, first year college student, Nagpur

What's your take? Do you think reservation for girls in any college/institution can better their chances? What could be alternative to increase their intake rather than reservation?

Its really very good because it was earlier there was a myth that only boys should take IIT and girls should go for teaching. Its really a good news that we are overcoming this.

never in support of reservation of any kind. This is just a shortcut because we don''t really wanna educate girls and take the pain instead we thought let''s apply the 70 year old '' fanda '' . Deserving students should get the seats whether a boy or a girl . We really need to get rid of this conventional thinking that reservation is the solution to every problem.

Ishika New era

Why reservation for girls? Is it something that girls can''t achieve? If we say that there is no difference between a boy or a girl then what is the need of reservation? This clearly shows that people still have a thought process that girls are less than boys! This decision has no sense! When we talk of being a true human being then i dont think at all that this will be a proud decision. Nobody should make a borderline between girls and boys again and remark us of the earlier ages.

I don''t feel that reservation will solve the problem. What if the deserving are pushed to the back? And what is the need of reservation. Girls are striving really hard.

I like this plan.Reservation for girls in college/institution is a good oppurtunity for girls.Girls are there in all fields. So we can use this golden oppurtunity

Afsha Saiyed PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

No! Reservation for girls is not at all a good idea because without reservation also girls can achieve.I don''t know why people want to show girls less than boys in every thing .Again this makes difference between girls and boys.

Aditya Kumar Singh ASHOK MEMORIAL SCH SEC-35 FBD

It is not a good idea as girls doesn''t need it. Instead it scholarship must be given to them who are able to clear IIT but can''t afford it by taking scholarship test

The reservation for girls isn''t a way out. Reservation is an unnecessary evil dominating in almost every government sector. But in IIT''s!? Well the girls are automatically going to enter IIT if they deserve and they are capable. Nw if you put reservation, dumb girls can also take admission in IIT and the intelligent and capable-deserving ones get left behind. So, I openly criticize this step of putting this much reservation for girls.(No offence to the intelligent girls)

Parishi Mishra RED ROSES SCHOOL SAKET R0554D

On one side, government says about gender equality, and on other hand, we will be having reservation for girls. Reservation is also a kind of discrimination whether it is based on caste, religion or gender. Admission in IIT should depend upon capability not upon gender. In today''s scenario, girls are self-sufficient. They don''t need any kind of reservation in any field of life. I don''t think that it will do any good.

Arohi Sharma BHATNAGAR INTERNATION SCHOOL

I think providing girls with reservation is not the best solution. Reservation provides a certain guarantee of getting admission and lessens the persons inner instinct to work hard for the part and thus makes it unfair for the people who worked really hard for it which is a major problem in india these days. The govt. should focus on educating the masses about the benefits of making their girls IIT Engineers. Making the people aware is the solution and not Reservations.

According to me, why shouldn''t girls apply for engineering colleges normally? What is the need for reservation? A girl should decide herself and think before applying for admission. She might change her mind after reservation.

It can be good or may not....Instead we should spread the word of studying hard and making our own place in the world...Instead of reservation they should provide vivid opportunities. As per me reservation is just a shortcut which would enforce the people to think in the way that girls cant go beyond boys or in simpler words girls cant succeed....

R.Varsha Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School - Puducherry

I don''t think so. Girls can and are rocking without all these kind of reservations. Instead of these reservations do encourage her .It works and she needs it.

Jessica Kabuli CARMEL CONVENT SCH SEC 9 CHD

Reservation is a wonderous thing. You love it when you get it but, hate it when others get it. Let us not presume girls to be incompetent to boys that they need an extra cushion to be at par with the opposite gender. I think this is totally against the notion of equality. In fact, I feel it''s high time we get away with reservation itself. Give all an equal platform to exceed in life irrespective of CAST, CREED & GENDER.

RIYA MITTAL Convent of Jesus and Mary

Reservation will just increase gender stereotypes. Girls should be given proper access to education so that they can achieve their aims on their own. They don''t need reservations at all. This can also build an inferiority complex among students . So equal opportunities should be provided to everyone and both girls and boys can meet with success.

I believe IIT is for the deserving ones. One has to make it to IIT on himself/herself.Reservations for IIT is a stupid thing to do.Giving admission to the reserved one might snatch a seat from the deserved one.

No,it is not at all good.It shows difference between boys and girls. It indirectly makes inequality between them.In my view, reservation says that girls didn''t had any talent. In society,it creates discrimination.I think reservation is not necessary, the govt should encourage to girls for their better survival. The girl child should provide scholarship to learn.

reservation for girls in IIT is absolutely beneficial . however it shouldnt become a criteria to make decisions for judging an individuals calibre to aspire nor should it motivate gender inequality. all the worthy students should get opportunities to shine and just because of seat reservations a deserving candidate should not see his efforts go in vain.

Khaleel Gibran Nandini High School

No, I don''t think girls should get reservations because, they don''t need any reservation they can have seats on their intelligence .Reservations can discourage girls. Without any reservation girls are doing awesome in every field.

IITs are known for their quality products. And of course, educated products mustn''t be categorized. Implementing reservations, be it for certain castes or for girls, would certainly hamper the quality produced by this esteemed organisation. The target should be economical up gradation and not easy provision. IIT is a tough nut due to reasons.

PRACHI AIRI QUEEN MARY NORTHEND(MODEL TOWN_3)

Reservations for girls....is not a good idea so far. It will create a feeling of negativity among girls. This will create more gender discrimination. As far as studies are concerned ,girls concentrate more on their carrier than boys if they are given the right support.Girls need no reservation but equal opportunities. But as far concerned in backward villages and countries like PAKISTAN girls future is not given that much importance. In that case this reservation system will definitely help.
