Are ODIs Losing Out To T20Is?

The International Cricket Council (ICC) issued a press release on Monday, stating the 2019 men's World Cup has been the most-watched ever. While the world body is holding its head high after the success of the World Cup, the irony is that the One Day International (ODI) format is fast losing its importance as a preferred format.

The Future Tours Programme (FTP) for the cycle till 2022, as released by ICC, says that no bilateral series will have more three ODIs. The number of T20Is has shot up. There are series which won't even feature ODIs over the next three years and some series will have an unprecedented five T20I games. Clearly, T20 has taken over as the premier limited-overs format.

"Bilateral series are organized entirely by the two participating boards. The ICC has given no such directive of playing lesser ODIs. But yes, there have been discussions to promote T20 cricket," an ICC source told TOI.

According to ICC sources, the priority is clearly on the revival of Test cricket through World Test Championship and globalizing the sport through T20s. A major reason for the spurt of T20Is is attributed to the ICC scrapping the ICC Champions Trophy in 2021 and replacing it with another T20 World Cup in India within a year of the one scheduled in Australia in October-November 2020.

ICC has been very aggressive in its drive to promote T20 cricket. In its global strategy, ICC has marked the format as the preferred vehicle to spread the game across the globe. "We may see the resurgence of the ODI format a year before the 2023 World Cup. ICC doesn't interfere in bilateral series but with the introduction of qualification system for the world events, ICC does make some suggestions to have the minimum number of games for the format," the source mentioned.

The uniformity challenge for World Test Championship

The world body is still coming to terms with sorting out the format for the World Test Championship. "There have been quite a few issues raised regarding the points system of the Test Championship and the number of matches played by each team. People have cited the disparity in the points awarded in the Ashes and the series between India and West Indies. The FTP was made before the Test Championship was announced. ICC has tried to bring in as much uniformity as possible. Maybe when the next FTP is finalized, a consensus could be reached about bringing about uniformity," the ICC source claimed.
