19-Year-Old Cycles For 33,000 KM

Tom Davies, 19, spent more than six months cycling around the  world. Covering 30,000 km, this British teenager became the  youngest person to achieve this remarkable feat. Excerpts from an interview with Rohit E David:

Q What made you undertake this journey?
It was in London where I suddenly thought, ‘why not go around the world on a cycle?’ It was a challenge.

Q But why at this juncture?
After finishing school, I was wondering what I should do before university classes which were a good six months away. Since I love cycling and wanted to travel and see the world, I thought it was the perfect way to club both.

Q How long have you been on the road?
It has been a tiring six-and-a-half months on the road.

Q What have you gained from the exercise?
The journey has made me rediscover myself.

Q What are the logistics of cycling around the world?
I knew I had to plan things down to the last detail as far handling my cycle was concerned. Plane trips of short durations required me to dismantle my cycle and put it in a special bike box - nothing less than a Herculean task!

Q What were some of your best experiences?
Getting to know about new cultures around the world was the best part of the world tour. I had never been to India before. The people, the colours, the food, the cattle… seeing them so close on the road made it a journey to remember.

Q Was your family worried about your whereabouts?
I updated by blog on a daily basis. So they knew where I was.
