Ethical Education Is Need Of The Hour

Sadhguru says schools must imbibe value education

On the concluding day of the Times Lit Fest, 2015, 'Sadhguru' Jaggi Vasudev stressed on ethical education to be made mandatory in schools

As the Government continues its crusade to enforce the teaching of moral science in all schools, there is a much more urgent issue that needs to be addressed — like 'charity begins at home', Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev believes that ethical education (what is right and wrong) should be taught by parents at home. “It’s not fair to blame the school for the child’s holistic development. As parents, that responsibility lies solely with you. It is sad that children these days are being exposed to technology, but are not aware of basic ethics,” he said, adding that schools could contribute in a positive manner too. Sadhguru was in the Capital for a concluding session in the Times Lit Fest.

At the root of all maladies is this lack of ethical education, he believes. “Ethical values do not allow you to act violently and unethically. Crime against women, theft, and other immoral issues in a society can easily be tackled by imparting ethical education,” Sadhguru tells us.

According to a recent study almost 56 percent of  private institutions have Moral Science as a part of their curricula where as 80 per cent of Government schools have included it as a subject. The Supreme Court in February 2015 issued notice to the Centre and CBSE on a PIL seeking its direction to include Moral Science as a compulsory subject in the school curriculum. “Our children need to be taught how to differentiate between right and wrong. They are going to be decision makers one day, let us teach them what is correct,” he said.

What is ethical education?

The basic concepts and fundamental principles of decent human conduct. It includes study of universal values such as the essential equality of all men and women, human or natural rights, obedience to the law of land, concern for health and safety and, increasingly, also for the natural environment.
