It’s been a while since we last saw Gibson in a masterpiece. We spin out a list of films that made Gibson what he is today - a boon to the silver screen.

1. Hamlet

Grapevine has it that director Franco Zeffirelli thought of Mel Gibson to play Dane after seeing his suicide attempt scene in ‘Lethal Weapon’. That was in fact the very first time that Gibson was playing a character from a Shakespearean novel, the actor nailed it. According to critics, Gibson made Hamlet more energetic and much more real than past screen incarnations.Zeffirelli acknowledged to a leading daily that no actor in the world could have done justice to the role!

2. Signs

Director producer M Night Shyamalan’s ‘Signs’ was promoted all over the world as a sci-fi thriller. In the film Gibson, plays a minister who lost his faith after the sudden death of his wife, to absolute perfection. As for Shyamalan, the director said he would want to work with Gibson again and again. "He is a real star. There can be no one greater than him," is what Shyamal told in an interview.

3. The Bounty

In this particular film, Gibson had big boots to fill as the previous (which dealt with the same subject) had starred Marlon Brando and Clark Gable — greats of their time. The Bounty was about a mutiny in a British Royal Navy ship. Gibson’s interpretation of Fletcher Christian was hailed to be at par with other iconic stars.

4. Braveheart

How can you not mention Braveheart when the talk is about Mel Gibson? Some of his fans argue that this is not his best, but it marks his great effort as a director. The maverick director nabbed both a Best Picture and Best Directing Oscar Award for this film in 1995. The actor says playing a war hero was a dream come true for him; but it is a role that he would never like to play again!

5. The Patriot

This American historical fiction war film directed by Roland Emmerich is touted to be one of the finest fiction films released world wide. During the premier of this film, Gibson's director introduced him as an “actor you can trust for every role and every script.”

6. Lethal Weapon

With this iconic film, Gibson announced his arrival in style. He became known for his impeccable comic timing too. The film that was made over four sequels went on to make over `50 million dollars in the box office. With this, Gibson became a household name. Director Edgar Wright said in an interview that the franchise is popular only because of “one man who turned the story on its head — none other than Mel Gibson.”

7. The Year of Living Dangerously

The film drew attention for the brand new look that Gibson sported. In this political thriller set in the backdrop of the beautiful Indonesia; Gibson discovered his romantic side too - He portrayed an excellent chemistry with co-star Sigourney Weaver.

8. Mad Max

It was this movie that put Mel Gibson on the map in Hollywood. The actor essayed the role of a cop whose family is killed by a vicious gang. He sets out on a bloody revenge. The film gave him the perfect canvass to showcase the actor's angry young man talent.
