Acid Attack Survivors' Supergirl

Priya, India’s first female superhero, made her debut at Comic Con Mumbai in 2014.

Priya originated after the horrible Delhi gang rape of 2012. The graphic novel by Ram Devineni, Lina Srivastava, and Dan Goldman is one of the most powerful comics, and talks about women’s rights and equality.

The latest issue, called 'Priya’s Mirror', talks about acid attack victims. The story revolves around Anjali, an acid attack survivor, and her escape from the demon called Ahankar. The reason the story is called 'Priya’s Mirror' is because Priya uses a mirror called ‘mirror of love’ to show survivors that they are more than their face.

The comic concludes with acid attack survivors from New York City, Bogota and Delhi. The 36-page comic will be unveiled at the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center later this week (from 30 September to 6 October). It will be available in five languages - English, Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian - and can also be downloaded free from its website.

A lot of effort (like this comic) is fueled into changing the society's views on the plight of a acid attack survivors. But it falls on deaf, apathetic ears. True or False? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

Every woman has a goddess in her. She can be as calm as Goddess Sarasvati, but when something wrong happens with her, she can be as ferocious as Goddess Kali. So, this Durga Puja, we must all take an oath to respect every woman, not only in our country but around the world. Acid attack survivors are the true superheros. I salute them for their courage to face the society and I will pray for their better future.

Exactly. Even after such great efforts, there exist such evils in our society. The stereotypical views of acid attack survivors continue to exist. However, survivors continue to send loud messages that they are no less and such incidents do not shatter their courage. Take the example of teenager Reshma Qureshi. She had an eye and her face was deformed after an acid attack. But she walked the ramp at the recent New York Fashion Week. Salutes to the survivors! May they have a good life ahead!
